Two consecutive months of above-average rainfall in northeast Florida still leaves parts of the St. Johns River Water Management District’s southern region.

The District’s Governing Board today approved two land purchases that will expand a popular recreation and conservation area near Osteen.

The District Governing Board approved $20.5 million in funding for cost-share projects for fiscal year 2022–2023.

The St. Johns River Water Management District will temporarily close the Fellsmere Grade Recreation Area (also known as Stick Marsh) parking area and boat ramp beginning the evening of May 22 through May 25 to conduct repairs.

Below average rainfall in May leads to parts of the St. Johns River Water Management District’s southern region (Brevard, Indian River, Osceola and Okeechobee) abnormally dry, as reported in the U.S. Drought Monitor.

The District is launching a project to mechanically harvest and remove mats of floating vegetation —and their associated nutrients — from waters within the Orange Creek Restoration Area. 

Today, the District Governing Board approved the execution of ten contracts that will provide local growers with over $1 million in cost-share funds.

The District has temporarily designated the area along the L-77 West Levee in the Blue Cypress Water Management Area, also known locally as Lake Garcia, as an idle speed zone.

The District will temporarily close two parking areas at Silver Springs Forest Conservation beginning June 27 through July 4 to complete upgrades.

The District is launching a project to increase recharge to the Upper Floridan aquifer in northeast Florida.

Florida has more than 4,200 natural lakes, and nearly 1,500 of those are within the boundaries of the District.

Recent rainfall throughout the District’s 18-county region has relieved portions of northeast Florida that had been abnormally dry after below-average rainfall in June.
