About this property
This conservation area provides the uplands that drain into several large basin swamps that form two streams, Deep Creek and Little Haw Creek. The creeks are the main tributaries for Lake Woodruff Basin and Crescent Lake Basin, respectively, providing protection to these water resources.
Formerly used for tree farming, an activity that altered the landscape of the mainly wet and mesic flatwoods, this property is now part of a larger corridor of public lands that protects environmentally sensitive resources in the region, as well as help provide a wildlife corridor for species listed as endangered, threatened or of special concern.
This property is adjacent to Tiger Bay State Forest (near International Speedway / U.S. 92) and the Plum Creek Volusia/Pineland Conservation Easement, south of DeLand. Other nearby public lands include Heart Island Conservation Area, Lake George State Forest and Lake Woodruff National Wildlife Refuge.
One of the special highlights of this property is the 5 miles of semi-shaded marked trail providing viewing opportunities for various wildlife species such as white-tailed deer and Osceola turkey.
Wildlife viewing
Please respect Florida’s wildlife and use caution while visiting district lands. These are wild animals. For your safety, do not approach or feed any wild animal. Species here include Florida black bear, bald eagle, sandhill crane, gopher tortoise and wood stork. Deer, turkey, migratory songbirds, swallow-tailed kite, heron, wood ducks and a variety of snakes and lizards have also been observed.
