Adventure awaits at Buck Lake Conservation Area

The District’s Buck Lake Conservation Area helps protect water resources in Volusia and Brevard counties.
Spanning 9,625 acres in Brevard and Volusia counties, Buck Lake Conservation Area is a hidden gem. Located in Mims, the St. Johns River Water Management District property offers a variety of resource-based recreational activities.
In 1993, the District began acquiring the parcels that comprise Buck Lake Conservation Area. It is situated at the northern end of the Upper St. Johns River Basin Project, a joint project with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, to provide flood protection, enhance water resources and protect ecological functions in the river’s headwaters. The conservation area safeguards regionally significant habitat for several plant and animal species and provides floodwater retention to slow downstream flooding.
“With 15 distinct natural communities, it is the most ecologically diverse property in the District’s south-central region,” Land Manager Graham Williams says. “Ranging from high and dry sandy scrub to expansive wet floodplains, there’s a lot to see and discover.”
With over 13 miles of marked trails that traverse the various ecosystems, Buck Lake Conservation Area is popular for hiking, trail running, biking, nature viewing and horseback riding. While exploring, visitors may see gopher tortoises, otters, deer, bobcats, alligators, foxes and a wide variety of birds.
For those who want to venture into Buck Lake, a small boat launch is on the property (day use permit is required) for fishing from paddlecraft and small boats. Also, an observation tower overlooks the lake, providing a scenic view. A reservable campsite near the lake offers the authentic outdoor experience of primitive tent-only camping (advance reservation required), and a first-come/first-served hike-in campsite is located on the property’s east side. Seasonal hunting is allowed on the property by permit from the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Area during specified times.
