New project expands use of reclaimed water in Sanford

“Developing alternative water supplies plays a significant role in determining future water supply needs,” said St. Johns River Water Management District Executive Director Dr. Ann Shortelle. “Through the district’s cost-share program, we have incredible opportunities to work together on projects that meet our shared goals of ensuring sustainable use of Florida’s water.”

“With the district’s assistance and a unique public-private partnership with Serengeti Properties, the city of Sanford is able to expand reclaimed water service to the New Seminole County Sports Complex and many planned homes in the high growth corridor of East Lake Mary Boulevard in the Orlando-Sanford International Airport area,” said Sanford Interim Utility Director Bill Marcous.

Construction is underway on the project, which includes the construction of a nearly 2.5-mile reclaimed water extension along Lake Mary Boulevard. The extension will support irrigation for 1,025 homes in future residential developments. Using reclaimed water for irrigation in place of potable, or drinking, water will help meet future water supply demands in the area.

Additionally, an expanded use of reclaimed water is expected to improve water quality by reducing nutrient loading into Lake Jesup, Lake Monroe and the St. Johns River’s middle basin.

The district contributed $255,405 to the project as part of its cost-share program. The project’s total construction cost is $733,048.
