District diverts floodwaters in response to high water levels and continued rainfall

MAITLAND, Fla., Oct. 5, 2017 — The St. Johns River Water Management District has opened water control structures on the 11-mile C-54 Canal in Brevard County to reduce the amount of water flowing north in the St. Johns River. The opening is due to flooding on the St. Johns River, as well as ongoing rainfall and predicted rainfall resulting from Tropical Storm Nate.

The water control structures will remain open until the rain subsides and water levels return to appropriate levels. During this time, the area will be closed to recreation.

The Jane Green Detention Area (Osceola County) and Taylor Creek Reservoir (Brevard County) are currently being used to store water. Control structures in those areas remain closed to hold water and reduce flows to the St. Johns River. The district continues to monitor rainfall and water levels to determine if future releases from these areas will be necessary to minimize flooding impacts.
