PALATKA, Fla., Oct. 1, 2019 — The St. Johns River Water Management District will hold two public meetings on Oct. 22 to kick off the peer review process of surface water models for Lake Apshawa in Lake County and Sylvan Lake in Seminole County, both located within the Central Florida Water Initiative (CFWI) area.

The district is currently completing a reevaluation of its adopted minimum flows and levels (MFLs) for Lake Apshawa and Sylvan Lake to ensure their continued protection. The current plan is to submit a Notice of Proposed Rule (NPR) for each lake by the end of 2020.

The district has updated Hydrological Simulation Program Fortran (HSPF) models that will be used to support the development and/or assessment of MFLs for each lake. These public meetings will kick off the peer review of these models. Future workshops will focus on peer review of model calibration and application.

The Oct. 22 meeting will start with a site visit at Lake Apshawa at 9 a.m. and will conclude with a 10:30 a.m. presentation and discussion of the Lake Apshawa MFLs HSPF model peer review at Wekiwa Springs State Park in Apopka.

The second meeting on Oct. 22 centers on the Sylvan Lake MFLs HSPF model peer review. This meeting will start at 1 p.m. with a presentation and discussion at Wekiwa Springs State Park in Apopka and will conclude with a site visit at 2:30 p.m. at Sylvan Lake Park in Sanford.
