All SJRWMD public lands have reopened for fall recreation
PALATKA, Fla., Nov. 9, 2016 — All St. Johns River Water Management District lands are open once again to the pubic after extensive cleanup following Hurricane Matthew last month. The Fort Drum Marsh Conservation Area reopened late last week in time for the start of hunting season, and Pellicer Creek Conservation Area reopened Tuesday.
“Our land resources staff worked hundreds of hours after the storm passed to inspect the district’s public lands and restore those impacted by the hurricane to a safe condition for recreational users,” said St. Johns River Water Management District Executive Director Dr. Ann Shortelle. “We are truly fortunate to have such a wonderfully dedicated staff to ensure our public lands are ready to go when you are.”
The district purchases and manages tracts of land that are important in protecting our water resources, keeping the land in its natural state. The land helps to filter out pollutants from runoff, prevent erosion and provide flood protection, and it serves as protected plant and animal habitat.
